The History of Japanese Maple
For more than 300 years Japanese maple trees have been developed and selected for their beauty and variation of form and colour. Japanese horticulturists have contributed to the world a heritage of beauty from this group of plants which are indigenous to their country. The native Japanese maple has the tendency to produce great variations within the species. By selection and cross-pollination, more than 250 cultivars have been developed. “Sango Kaku”
The brilliant coral of the bark is the outstanding feature. at times the colour almost becomes fluorescent. The younger the wood the stronger the colour. The tones brighten in the fall and then intensify as winter approaches. The colour is especially striking in snow. Typically, for this type of Japanese maple, the small leaves have five to seven ovate-acuminate lobes that taper to a sharp point. The margins are toothed.
In the spring the light yellow green leaves have strong reddish margins, giving the tree a striking appearance. As summer approaches, the foliage becomes a bright, light green. The colour turns to a yellow gold in the fall, with a blend of apricot and light red.

“Attraction”
This cultivar of Japanese maple is a seedling selection. The large leaves are divided almost to the leaf base. The lobes are long-ovate and the outer ends gradually taper to a sharply pointed tip. The red leaf stalks are short and stiff. Leaf colour is deep purple-red or maroon. Tones are brightest on new leaves and then become deeper in summer. The colour holds well but burns in hot locations.
The leaves turn bright crimson in the fall. A vigorous a sturdy grower. Becomes a tall upright round headed tree.
WHAT IS A JAPANESE MAPLE?
The term “Japanese maple” has two meanings. One is applied by the nursery industry which has often grouped all the cultivars of several Acer species under the general term “Japanese Maples”. Most often included in this group are all the cultivars and forms of Acer palmatum.
The second meaning of the term “Japanese maple” is used by the serious dendrologist to indicate all 23 Acer species that are endemic to the islands of Japan and nearby territories.

A small deciduous tree with an upright vase-shaped form. The highly serrated small green leaves have a noticeable white edge which can have a touch of pink in the spring. Growth habit is narrowly upright and twiggy. Is considered one of the most stunning and most desired. Leaves can scorch in hot full sunlight. Prefers sun/partial shade in well-drained soil.
