It’s name means ‘new blood-red’, and it is sometimes known as Shin deshsojo, ( the Imp being improved). In the spring it is one of the most vividly coloured foliage with the colour being described as letter-box red. Flaming scarlet or crimson-scarlet would also be appropriate names. This colour is retained for a couple of months and turns a reddish brown mid summer. Occasionally the leaves have cream coloured or white flecks . In the autumn the colour changes to orange and red. Small seven loved leaves have tiny basal lobes. Grows to a shrub of 4 mtr (10ft) high and 2 mtr wide (6ft).
