Has large multi-dissected leaves which are a deep crimson-red in spring but soon changes to a very dark purple-red. It has excellent colour tones that holds all through the summer. In the autumn the colour is bright scarlet. The bark of the shoots is maroon with a whiteish tone. This is one of the older cultivars with reports of its beauty as far back as 1710. The name in Japanese means tribute to the mountain. This maple can grow to 4 mtrs (13ft) high.
